Candidate Requirements

Each candidate must be qualified to hold an office. The following is a list of requirements for offices in each level of government:

Office Requirements
United States President Be at least 35 years of age; a natural-born citizen; and a resident within the United States for 14 years.
United States Senator Be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States for at least 9 years; a Tennessee resident for at least 3 years; a district resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
United States Representative Be at least 25 years of age; a citizen of the United States for 7 years; and a Tennessee resident.
Governor Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States for at least 9 years; a resident of the State of Tennessee at least seven (7) years prior to an election; and a qualified registered voter.
Congressional Representative Be at least 25 years of age; a citizen of the United States for at least 7 years; a resident of the State of Tennessee; and a qualified registered voter.
State Executive Committee Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be a bona fide member of the political party whose election is sought. Note: one man and one woman is elected to the executive committee in each party’s primary for each senatorial district.
State Senator Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Tennessee for at least 9 years; a county or district resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
State Representative Meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101; and be at least 21 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Tennessee for at least 3 years; a county resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
Mayor and Vice Mayor Be at least 30 years of age; and a resident of Carroll County Tennessee for at least 3 years.
Register of Deeds Be at least 18 years of age.
Supreme Court Judge Be at least 35 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident for at least 5 years; and a qualified registered voter.
Court Judge – Circuit, Chancery and Others Be at least 30 years of age; a citizen of the United States; a resident of the State of Tennessee for at least 5 years; a resident of the circuit or district for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter.
School Board Member Be at least 25 years of age; a resident of Carroll County Tennessee for at least 5 years; a district resident for at least 1 year; and a qualified registered voter. Additionally, candidates shall hold no other elective or appointive public office and meet the basic qualifications of TCA § 8-18-101.
